The Best New Cafes in Toronto for 2020

The best new cafes in Toronto only had a few months of glory before the rest of 2020 became a no-seating zone. While we miss hanging around the shop with a mug in hand, the stellar caffeine to-go still goes a long way.

Here are the best new cafes in Toronto.

East Toronto Coffee Co.

East Toronto Coffee Co.

This Danforth East spot has been pouring up rainbow lattes since the beginning of 2020, kicking things off by swapping people's old mugs and spoons for free coffee. Aside from bean water, this community hub also runs raffles and giveaways for charity.

Poured Coffee

Poured Coffee

Located by Woodbine station, Poured prides itself as the only zero-waste coffee shop in the city. That means no paper cups, containers, napkins, or disposable products — just a stock of sustainable goods and delicious lattes.

Congo Coffee & Beignets

Congo Coffee & Beignets

Congolese coffee and beignets come via owner Nia Bangala, who blends her humanitarian interests with her passion for coffee. The deep-fried beignets are killer, plus proceeds from her coffee shop go towards economic projects in Congo.

The Oats Kafe

The Oats Kafe

This coffee shop brings Vietnam's caffeinated favourites to Bay and Wellesley. The menu includes bac xiu (white coffee), classic black coffee with condensed milk, and hot egg coffee. Their iced tea options include hard-to-find flavours like lychee and lemongrass.

Manita

Manita

New to Lower Ossington is this pretty cafe on the corner of Rolyat Street. Part coffee shop, part grocery store, Manita's menu is pretty extensive, with cheeseburgers on Blackbird Baking Co. buns and desserts, alongside macchiatos and mistos.

Simple Coffee

Simple Coffee

Opened by three good friends at the eleventh hour of 2020, this Beaches neighbourhood cafe is, as its name suggests, a no-frills spot for cups of very good joe and bags of Detour beans.

Subtext Coffee

Subtext Coffee

An offshoot of the multi-location Toronto favourite Boxcar Social, this micro-roaster on Cawthra is serving espresso-based coffees and pourover sourced from regions all over the world. Coffee lovers can expect seasonal flavours throughout the year.

KX Coffee Bar

KX Coffee Bar

Before you pump those irons you have to fuel up. Luckily Yorkville has this cafe-meets-gym, which was perfect for the fitness folks pre-lockdown. KX also offers groceries, maple syrup as an alternative sweetener, and all the usual nut milk alternatives.
