520 Cafe Bar

520 Cafe Bar, a groovy new establishment in Queen West, is a little like a mullet: the epitome of "business in the front, party in the back."

The cafe portion of the new spot is the perfect place to caffeinate while finishing some remote work, or to grab a matcha and pastry with a friend.

Located at the bottom of the newly-completed Rush Condos tower tucked near Queen and Portland, the sun-filled, industrial-feeling space will no doubt pick up some great foot traffic from condo dwellers in the area, especially after the departure of nearby Beatrice Society in 2024.

520 cafe barBut this shop, that is, by all outward appearances, your conventional neighbourhood java joint, boasts a truly hidden gem — if you know about it, that is.

The cost of entry to the cocktail bar, half of 520, is a trip through Graffiti Alley and a bit of detective work to find its entrance, concealed among the others along the technicoloured laneway.

520 cafe barBehind the nondistinct grey door, covered in spray-paint and flanked by street art on all sides, a moody, mid-century modern parallel universe awaits those who can find it.

Step inside and you'll be enveloped by a dark hallway that transports you to a stylish red-hued room full of sumptuous textures — think velvet chairs, soundproofing wood-panelled walls, smoked glass light fixtures, and a particular standout, a raw stone bar.

520 cafe barIt's a place that feels like a sanctuary from the din of Queen West outside, and where time seems to stand still, giving you a chance to catch up with loved ones over small bites and handcrafted cocktails in one-of-a-kind flavour profiles, all while a curated playlist (or better yet, live performance) bumps in the background.

Owner Gizelle has been a Toronto nightlife fixture for 15 years, paying her dues as a host, server, bartender — you name it —  largely to complement her photography, videography and other artistic endeavours.

Most recently, she helped manage a restaurant in Grand Bend with her parents. When it sadly closed over COVID, she decided to embark on another family restaurant project, this time putting herself in the driver's seat.

520 cafe bar"This was the next step for me in terms of the industry side of myself, and it made sense after all the time I invested into bars and restaurants, which I had learned to love," Gizelle told us. "Hospitality became a passion of mine rather than just something on the side of being creative."

520's snack-style menu is a decidedly "no concept concept" that is ever-evolving with new additions and is anchored around Gizelle's own cocktails, all concocted with homemade syrups and full of Filipino inspiration.

520 cafe barA standout is the Something Smoky, her take on a whiskey sour that borrows tasting notes from Caldereta, a Filipino stew. An in-house syrup infused with the dish's distinctive spices serves as the backbone of each perfectly-balanced sip.

If you're looking for something spicy, tart, herbaceous, sweet, or even non-alcoholic, there are offerings for you, each of them serving as a representation of the exceptional level of thought and intention that went into 520's overall design. In the vein of the speakeasy concept, secret drinks and dishes will also be available to those in the know.

520 cafe barAlong with helming the menu, Gizelle designed every aspect of the artfully-appointed space, and also the events programming that serves as a cornerstone — if not the cornerstone — of the new spot.

"It's not only the menu I'm concerned about, it's the vibe," she says. "For me, the music is everything. I've always been heavily influenced by music, and putting on musical performances and DJs here is the forefront of the space."

Themed gatherings thus far have ranged from hip-hop soundbath and meditation sessions focusing on creative wellbeing and mindfulness to disco, soul and funk parties hosted by local DJ talent.

"It's just always been about community and about keeping the culture here in Toronto. It's worth celebrating, we're such a diverse city," Gizelle says, adding that part of her mission has been to not just create a place that fosters creativity and community, but that differentiates itself from the King and Queen West thoroughfares that it's sandwiched between.

I'd say she's definitely hit her mark with 520, which has its own unique pulse, day or night.
