10 natural swimming spots in Ontario for sticky summer days

There's something magical about swimming in a natural setting in Ontario, surrounded by the beauty and tranquility of nature. If you're looking for some breathtaking natural swimming spots to spend some magical days this summer, this list is for you.

Here are some natural swimming spots in Ontario for sticky summer days.

Grand River Valley

The Grand River Valley has so many spots for a perfect swim, with calm waters and sandy banks perfect. One of the most popular spots along the river is Brant Conservation Area, near the cute little town of Paris.

The Grand River is perfect leisurely swims or renting a canoe, or kayak, or even taking a river tour. The river is relatively shallow and gentle, making it a safe option for swimmers of all ages. So, pack a little picnic and spend a relaxing day by the water.

Decew Falls

Located in St. Catharines, Decew Falls features two beautiful waterfalls and a picturesque swimming hole. The hike to the falls is a bit challenging, but once you arrive, you'll be rewarded with cool, clear waters perfect for a refreshing dip.

High Falls in Algonquin Provincial Park

High Falls is a hidden gem within Algonquin Provincial Park, offering a secluded swimming experience surrounded by stunning natural beauty. The hike to High Falls is about three kilometres and takes you through dense forests and scenic trails.

The waterfall is smooth enough to slide down and a natural pool at its base, ideal for cooling off after the hike on a hot summer day. Be prepared for a bit of a trek, but the tranquility and beauty of this spot make it a must-visit.

Elora Gorge

Elora Gorge in the beautiful small town of Elora is a stunning natural swimming spot known for its dramatic limestone cliffs and the Grand River flowing through it. The gorge provides plenty of opportunities for swimming, river tubing, and even cliff jumping for the adventurous.

To reach the best swimming spots, a short hike through the conservation area is required, but the scenic views and refreshing waters make it well worth the effort.

Burleigh Falls

Burleigh Falls, on Stoney Lake near Peterborough, is a popular spot for swimming and picnicking. The small falls create some pools where you can swim and cool off. Further away from the falls, the waters calm down, making it a great destination for families.

Egan Chutes

Egan Chutes Provincial Park just outside of Bancroft is home to several beautiful chutes and waterfalls, creating excellent swimming spots. The park features a short hike to reach the chutes, where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of rushing water.

The swimming areas here are some of my favourite, perfect for a refreshing dip, but be cautious of strong currents and slippery rocks around the water. It's an excellent spot for a day trip filled with adventure and relaxation.

Bathtub Island

Bathtub Island in Lake Superior is a unique swimming spot that resembles a natural bathtub. The island is a short hike from Katherine Cove and you can wade to it from the shoreline.

The shallow waters around the island warm up quickly in the sun, making it an ideal spot for swimming. The clear, turquoise waters and sandy bottom create an incrdedible spot, perfect for those insta-worthy moments.

The Cove at Canatara Beach

Canatara Beach in Sarnia is famous for this delightful swimming spot known as The Cove, featuring calm, shallow waters perfect for a relaxing swim. The sandy beach is easily accessible with nearby parking and amenities, making it a convenient destination for families.

Bridal Veil Falls on Manitoulin Island

Bridal Veil Falls on Manitoulin Island is a stunning waterfall with a pool at its base. The waterfall creates a natural curtain of water, creating a fantasy-like swimming experience. The surrounding area is also perfect for picnicking and exploring the beauty of Manitoulin Island.

Tobermory

Tobermory, at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula, is famous for its crystal-clear waters and stunning underwater scenery. The popular swimming spot, The Grotto, features a natural cave with beautiful blue waters.

Accessing the Grotto requires a moderate hike through Bruce Peninsula National Park, but the views and swimming experience are unparalleled. Due to its popularity, booking a time slot in advance is necessary to ensure entry.
