Here's when flying out of Hamilton or Buffalo is cheaper than Toronto

With summer now in full swing, you might be looking to lock down your travel plans, and if you're searching for budget-friendly ways to explore the world, flying out one airport versus another can make all the difference.

In an effort to keep travel costs low, it seems like more and more Toronto travellers have opted to fly out of John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport or Buffalo Niagara International Airport instead of Pearson Airport — but can choosing one over another actually save you some change?

Depending on where and when you fly, the answer is yes, although there are a few things you'll have to consider beforehand. Buffalo's Airport is about a two-hour drive from Toronto, and you'll obviously have to cross the U.S.-Canada border.

While some flights out of the quiet airport might be cheaper, you'll also have to account for parking costs (if you're driving there), or bus tickets — which start as low as $19.49 on a one-way journey with Greyhound.

When it comes to U.S. destinations, making the trek to Buffalo might be worth it. Roundtrip flights from Toronto to New York City are in the $432-$511 range in mid-August, while they're drastically cheaper from Buffalo ($191-$210).

From Pearson Airport to Orlando, you can expect to dish out just over $600 for roundtrip flights in mid-August, while the cheapest roundtrip option out of Buffalo is about half the price at $318.

The same goes for roundtrips flights to Denver (approximately $524 from Toronto versus $392 from Buffalo), Dallas ($534 from Toronto, $394 from Buffalo), Charlotte ($500 from Toronto, $180 from Buffalo), Washington D.C. ($334 from Toronto, $246 from Buffalo), and Atlanta ($631 from Toronto, $162 from Buffalo).

There are also a few international destinations that are cheaper to fly to from Buffalo instead of Toronto, namely London, England ($963 from Toronto in August, versus $822 in Buffalo), and Paris ($903 from Buffalo, $1,082 from Toronto).

In some cases, flights out of Buffalo to these international destinations may be more expensive (especially given the time of year) so it's always a good idea to compare flight options out of both airports.

However, when it comes to flying domestically, it's almost always cheaper to fly from Toronto Pearson to cities like Edmonton, Montreal, and Vancouver than Buffalo.

Flights out of Hamilton almost always have a layover at Toronto Pearson Airport, so in most cases, the one to one-and-a-half hour drive isn't completely justified.

For example, a roundtrip flight in August to Calgary is $559 out of Hamilton's airport, and $491 from Toronto Pearson. However, roundtrip flights to Keflavik, Iceland during the same time are $631 from Hamilton and $822 from Toronto.

When it comes to flying to some U.S. cities like Orlando, Hamilton, and Toronto don't differ too drastically in their flight prices.

Despite these examples, it's always a good idea to compare dates, because flights on specific days may cost less. Before booking your flights, make sure to double-check each option, as doing so may save you hundreds of dollars in the long run.
