Ex-Toronto Raptors player achieves villain status after comments about Canada

Don't expect Thad Young to be coming to too many Toronto Raptors alumni events anytime soon.

Speaking this week with the Tidal League's Out The Mud Podcast, Young opened up about his parts of three seasons in Toronto, where he played 103 games from 2022 through 2024.

A veteran of eight NBA franchises and 17 years in the league, the New Orleans native didn't look back too fondly on his time in Canada.

"I ain't gonna lie, being in Toronto was kinda tough," Young said. "It's cool to visit, be there for like four or five days, but to live there, it was tough. It was tough on my family."

Young was traded to the Raptors in 2022 along with a second-round pick, in exchange for Goran Dragic and a first-round pick.

Dragic hadn't done himself many favours with similar comments about not wanting to be in Toronto before he ever played for the team, but the move seemed largely centred around getting a veteran presence like Young around a youthful Raptors team.

While Raptors fans have panned the trade since it happened for moving off of a first-round pick, it would be interesting to see how the front office feels about the move in hindsight.

"It's almost like you're at a disadvantage," Young added. "We had to go through the airport every single time. You gotta go through the airport, it's the customs part of it. It's like, you mean to tell me I just paid for the package and now I've got to pay more money to get my package from you? Like, c'mon, man. Customs? Then getting stuck at the border. I got stuck at the border for like three or four hours."

Raptors fans didn't take too kindly to the comments.

"Man's crying over a few extra bucks to get his packages," @MaFuzzyRaps said. User @BlayneBree called him "insecure," while @LucasCalsetto called him out for "whining."

The comments are reminiscent of ones made by Lou Williams in 2019 about challenges playing in Canada, which included not being able to access certain American TV channels.
