Former Toronto Raptors player calls Drake selfish for DeRozan comments
Lou Williams might've been featured in a Drake track during his time with the Toronto Raptors, but he's picking teammates over musicians in the latest beef involving the team.
On Saturday night, Drake went viral over comments about DeMar DeRozan, the Raptors' all-time leading scorer.
"If you ever put a DeRozan banner up, I'll go up there and pull it down myself," Drake said on the broadcast during Saturday night's game, which saw the franchise retire Vince Carter's No. 15.
Drake appeared peeved by DeRozan's appearances in the music video and on stage with Kendrick Lamar for the song Not Like Us, a pointed diss track at the Toronto rapper and official Raptors global ambassador.
"He's going to have a long way to climb to take it down; tell him good luck," DeRozan told reporters Saturday night following the game against his Sacramento Kings.
And Williams, who played with DeRozan and was also featured by name in the song "6 Man" by Drake, felt that one person in the incident centred themselves a bit too much over the weekend.
"If I'm gonna speak candidly, I thought that was selfish of Drake," Williams said today on Run it Back presented by FanDuel TV. "Drake as well as the country of Canada, the city of Toronto, they know what DeMar DeRozan has contributed to the culture up there, and what he's contributed to the Toronto Raptors, and to that community."
"It goes way bigger than his personal relationship with Drake, it goes way bigger than his personal relationship with Kendrick… it's like, is it just about you, or is it about the Toronto Raptors?"
In the 2014-15 season, Williams averaged 15.5 points, 2.1 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 80 games for the Raptors, and won his first of three Sixth Man of the Year awards, before leaving the team in free agency.
"I hate to see it… Drake knows what DeMar DeRozan means to that city. For Drake to say that, I thought it was kinda silly," Williams added. "But all is fair in a rap beef… as long as no one crosses a line. But I thought this was kind of selfish of Drake being that he is an official representative of the Toronto Raptors."
"He was 100 per cent serious too," Williams' co-host Chandler Parsons added. "He was definitely not joking… but he's going to get overruled. It's entertaining, it's funny, but [DeRozan] is going to get a banner."
