play on the runway downsview

Free event will transform a Toronto airport runway into busy summer destination

You'll be able to put your best wheel forward and zip off to a day of fun on a disused airport runway this summer.

Play On The Runway is returning for its third run after the decommissioned Downsview Airport opened its runways to the public for the first time in 2022.

The annual event, which transforms Downsview's two-kilometre runway into a playground of fun activities and community outreach, is being hosted by Northcrest Developments in advance of the firm's transformation of the 370-acre airport lands into a series of mixed-use neighbourhoods.

The developers plan to convert the former military-turned-commercial aviation site into the city's largest playground that nurtures creativity and community.

"It speaks to the endless possibilities for play and creativity on our site and the spirit of community and one-of-a-kind destination that will be built here in the years ahead," said Mitchell Marcus, Executive Director of Site Activation & Programming at Northcrest.

He said that it is an opportunity to see what Torontonians can do "with a two-kilometre canvas of uninterrupted runway space."

The event encourages participants to bring bikes, scooters, rollerblades, skateboards, unicycles, strollers, and tricycles. In case they are not able to bring their own gear, electric scooters, roller skates, and bikes are available at the site. Games like giant foosball, mini stick 3x3 hockey, tic-tac-dunk, and life-size Jenga are also on the roster.

The event will also feature enthralling roller-dancing shows, Hula dancers, and the Bangerz Brass Band, who will offer pop-up performances. For those of you who adore furry friends, The Ultimutts will present a unique stunt show featuring talented cats and dogs.

Adding a splash of colour to the skyline, the Toronto Kite Fliers will be at the event with a vibrant display of kites. You can bring your own to join in the fun or grab a complimentary kite on-site.

An array of food and ice cream trucks will line the venue to satiate your taste buds.

This is not the only calendar event that the developers organize on the runway. In June this year, they held a drive-in movie weekend called Runway Reels: A Retro Outdoor Film Experience. It featured a line-up of cult classics and short films, live DJs and drag performances. In January, they hosted Hangar Skate, a weekend of ice skating that aimed to promote the sport among Toronto residents.

The free-to-attend event will take place at the Downsview Airport Lands on August 17 and 18 from noon to 5 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to register in advance.

For those taking public transportation, there will be complimentary shuttle services every 15 minutes from Wilson Station.
