Magic Door

Magic Door is a private tattoo and ceramics studio offering both reasonably-priced tattoos and pottery lessons in Parkdale.

Nestled between Brock and Dufferin, the studio is located in 77 Florence St.'s warehouse-style loft building, which also houses a handful of other small businesses.

Maya Brubacher, Sophie van Dalen, and Ainslie Hamel leased the space together this spring in a bid to seize control of their own futures and express their creativity — on their own terms.

Despite residing in the basement, the studio feels open and bright, kissed by natural lighting from a ground-level window and accented with potted plants, framed art, and a tastefully-painted door (the shop's namesake).

Hamel says they do both custom and flash (pre-drawn designs) tattoos, which typically cost between $175-250 depending on the size and complexity of the design.

Meanwhile, Brubacher does primarily custom designs and charges an hourly rate of $150 for flash and $180 for custom.

Both artists can be booked via their respective Instagrams, @ainsliewould and @robotgirltattoos

As the studio's resident ceramicist, van Dalen offers private beginner classes, priced at $135 for three hours.

She says that in order to ensure she can provide a focused and personalized experience, the maximum amount of people in any given class is two.

Any pieces she makes are finished in the kiln at The Pottery in the Junction.

To book a private pottery workshop or inquire about purchasing her work, van Dalen can be contacted at her Instagram, @xiu_m3i

Whether you're looking for a comfortable space to get a tattoo or explore the art of ceramics, Magic Door is an exciting spot to check out.
