Woojoo Bunsik
Woojoo Bunsik is a restaurant and snack bar in the Annex that serves up Korean street food at an affordable price.
Their name highlights the experience you're getting when you visit, with "bunsik" referring to simple and convenient meals, and "woo-joo" meaning "space/universe".
Inside, the restaurant's spacious interior is accented by soothing navy blue lights and various spaced themed design elements.
Start your meal with the Cheese Butter Garlic Fries ($7.99), a delightful snack designed for sharing and generously coated with melted cheese and honey garlic seasonings.
The Unagi ($9.99 for two) is a medley of fried tofu pockets, sushi rice, grilled eel and teriyaki sauce. It makes for a unique appetizer you can't find at a lot of restaurants around the city.
Larger plates including tteokbokki, pasta and udon, all accompanied by your choice of fixings, ranging from classic hot sauce to the irresistible mala and mild basil cream.
However, the star of the show is definitely the chicken bokki stew ($15.99)— essentially, rice cakes with chicken meat, sausages and onion.
I opted for the normal spice level for a subtle heat that enhanced rather than overwhelmed. I recommend the the light and fluffy sweet potato mousse ($2.99) as an add-on.
Another option from the list of mains is the Spicy Mayo Salmon ($9.99) rice plate that comes with pickled radish, seaweed, crunchy fried onion, diced egg and salmon, all finished with creamy mayo drizzles.
Though messy, the best way to savour this dish is by shaping it into flavourful bites with your hands. Disposable gloves are provided by the restaurant.
Also on the menu are a variety of options like the spicy and chewy rice cake, deep-fried small plates, tofu pocket rice, and Korean rice balls (Jumeokbap).
Woojoo Bunsik is located at 417 Bloor St W.
