Tzatziki on Mount Pleasant
Tzatziki has opened a second location in Midtown Toronto, offering an array of comforting Greek classics conveniently available for takeout.
The original family-owned and operated restaurant opened in 2013 in Pape Village. Now run by Menelaos Konstantinidis, the family hopes to continue opening more Tzatziki spots in the future.
The new takeout location, designed for grab-and-go, works with Uber Eats and also offers catering if you're planning to host a big fat Greek event anytime soon.
For appetizers, we began with my favourite Greek dish, Dolmades ($15.95). These are stuffed grape leaves filled with rice and served with a bright, refreshing lemon sauce.
At Tzatziki, they serve their dolmades cold, which I thoroughly enjoyed given the hot summer day. The grape leaves were well stuffed, and I would happily order them again.
One of Tzatziki’s specialties is the Pork Gyros ($9.75). Upon entering, you'll spot the pork cooking on the spit.
Expertly shaved, it comes packed in a pita with tzatziki, fresh fries, and thinly sliced onion. You also have the option of adding other toppings such as kopanisti ($2), hummus ($2), feta cheese ($2), tomatoes, or lettuce.
All dips and spreads are made in-house with quality ingredients. You can taste the freshness of the tzatziki - it’s thick and tangy from the yogurt, with hints of dill and garlic.
The pita bread is fluffy and soft, having been described by one of the partners as a mix between a traditional Greek pita and a naan.
If you're hungry, the classic Chicken Souvlaki Dinner ($24.95) comes with two large chicken skewers and all the fixings. The chicken was perfectly cooked, well-seasoned, and juicy. Dunked in the tzatziki, it's a perfect bite.
It's served with two sides of rice, roast potatoes, or fries. Sometimes the standard rice and potatoes can leave a little to be desired, but the potatoes at Tzatziki were some of the best Greek potatoes I've ever had.
They were soft and had so much lemon flavour in every bite, and reminded me of something that would come straight from a Yiayia's kitchen.
The classic dinner also comes with two warm pitas sliced and a side of Greek Salad. For a little meal hack, you can ask for the pita not sliced and use them to make two wraps.
The Greek Salad was very traditional with chopped romaine lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, Feta cheese, kalamata olives, and an olive oil and oregano vinaigrette. The Feta is imported from Greece and is perfectly creamy and salty.
For dessert, there was an orange yogurt cake special ($7.95). It was moist and sweet.
The Loukoumades Honey Balls ($9.95) are another must-try homemade dessert. These dozen perfectly round fried donuts are coated in a sticky golden honey syrup
Tzatziki is located at 758 Mt Pleasant Rd.
