Top Gun Burgers
Top Gun Burgers offers 18 different burger incarnations as well as creative sides.
The space is huge; there's enough seating to accommodate 45 people. The walls are lined with appropriately-themed pictures of aircraft controls with descriptions of their various functions.
We order the Cheese Fries to start ($4.50). It's loaded with cheddar and jack cheese and a generous amount of chipotle mayo, which has a nice kick to it. It's satisfying but heavy, and the portion is huge. I would recommend sharing it with a companion - or two.
As with the menu items at Top Gun Steak, the burgers here have been given various aircraft-inspired names: Starfighter, Firefly, Black Eagle, etc.
We order the MIG31 burger ($10.50). It consists of a crusted mac and cheese patty, made with mozzarella, which sits on top of a beef patty that already has a slice of cheddar on it. There's also lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and bacon. It tastes awesome, although it would have been more manageable if the mac and cheese patty was thinner.
Next up is the Invader burger. Three beef patties, each with a slice of cheddar on top, are sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches. Lettuce, caramelized onion, pickles and chipotle mayo round out the dish.
The beef patties, are flavourful and juicy, and the grilled cheese could stand on its own. But the burger is difficult to handle, logistically. It's three burgers in one, essentially.
Also on the menu are more moderately-sized burgers like the classic cheeseburger - or rather, as it's called here, the Hellcat. There's also veggie and chicken burgers, and a kids' menu.
All the ingredients are locally sourced. The veggies come from the nearby Augusta Fruit Market; the beef comes from St. Helen's; the bread from Scarborough's Toronto Bread Company; and the chicken from Milton's Sargent Farms. The meat is ground on-site and the bread is delivered fresh each morning.
With the exception of the ketchup, all the sauces adorning the various burgers - grilled jalapeno-mint aioli, rosemary-garlic aioli, jerk sauce and chipotle aioli - are made in house.
