Slider Station
Slider Station is Scarborough's newest spot for snacks, shakes and, of course, sliders.
Located across from Parkway Mall, this small storefront has quickly become a destination for fans of bite-sized food.
Business partners Bilal and Zahid came up with the concept after noticing a lack of slider-centric restaurants in the city.
The pair took inspiration from classic American comfort food, as well as the South Asian dishes they ate growing up.
Aesthetically, the restaurant owes a lot to late '80s and early '90s street art.
The murals that decorate the walls — designed by a friend of the owners' — depict anthropomorphic appliances skateboarding, spray-painting and talking on oversized cellphones.
These mascots can also be seen on the menu board and takeout flyers.
Bilal says that the mascots are meant to evoke a sense of nostalgia, which is also reflected in the restaurant's old-school offerings.
He explicitly compares Slider Station's "main character" — a hamburger sporting sunglasses — to Bart Simpson, an influential figure in '90s pop culture.
Slider Station's menu follows a simple formula: pick a sandwich, then stick it in a slider box.
Each box comes with three sliders and a side of seasoned waffle fries. Bacon and cheese can be added to any combo for $2 extra.
The cheeseburger slider box ($15) is simple but satisfying, making it a good starting point for less adventurous diners.
These tiny beef patties are topped with American cheese, house sauce and pickles, giving them a comfortingly familiar taste.
The chopped cheese slider box ($17) is one of the store's best sellers, no doubt due to the chopped cheese trend that has taken TikTok by storm.
Ground beef, shredded cheddar and caramelized onions are mixed together to create an ooey-gooey mess of meat and cheese.
Bilal tells us that he and Zahid developed the recipe after noticing the similarities between this New York staple and the loose meat sandwiches their parents used to make. The chicken parmesan slider box ($17) takes everything you love about chicken parm, shrinks it down and places it between two soft brioche buns.
The chicken itself is juicy and tender, but it was actually the cutlet’s crunchy coating that impressed me most. Not only was it crispy and well-seasoned, it paired perfectly with the cheese and tomato sauce.
The eggplant parmesan slider box ($14) is the chicken parm's meatless counterpart and Slider Station's premier vegetarian option.
Zahid and Bilal considered other meat substitutes, including mushrooms and jackfruit, but ultimately chose eggplant, citing its "meaty" texture and relative lack of allergens as the deciding factors.
Mac 'n cheese ($6) is one of several alternative side dishes. This creamy pasta is enhanced by a dusting of aromatic spices. It's almost filling enough to eat on its own!For dessert, funnel fries ($7) come loaded with powdered sugar and your choice of syrup. If you're in the mood for something cold, a scoop of ice cream can be added for $1. In addition to standard flavours like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, milkshakes ($5) are made with less common ingredients, including Oreo and Biscoff.
Zahid credits his children with the creation of these flavours, claiming that they wanted the milkshakes to stand out.
Though the restaurant has only been open since the beginning of October, Slider Station has still managed to make a splash.
"It’s been insane," says Zahid, recalling the sheer number of orders they received in their first month. Bilal notes that this is an impressive feat, as the restaurant is only open four days a week.
Slider Station is located at 80 Ellesmere Rd, Unit 2.
