Sinjeon Topokki
Sinjeon Topokki is where you can satisfy your cravings for Korean street food near TMU campus.
Every dish is individually prepared to accommodate your desired level of spiciness, ranging from their signature Topokki (spicy rice cakes) to the comforting Kimbap (seaweed rice roll) and Korean rice bowls.
Founded in 1999, Sinjeon now has two locations in Toronto. At this location, the restaurant is adorned with vibrant wall art to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
From the menu, I recommend starting with a snack basket if you're sharing with friends. The Fried Combo ($9.99) is an assortment of chewy fish cake sticks along with savory pork dumplings, seaweed rolls and fish cake rolls filled with glass noodles.
Add the deep-fried cheese sticks ($4.99 for five) to your combo if you can't resist food with Instagrammable cheese pulls.
Also not to be missed on their menu is Kimbap, bite-sized seaweed rice rolls infused with aromatic sesame oil.
Tuna Kimbap ($10.99) is similar to tuna salad encased in rice, and is a non-spicy alternative for those who can't handle the heat.
There's also a version with cheese ($12.99) that includes stir-fried kimchi, Sinjeon's signature spicy sauce and melted cheese. The spice for this one is a bit more intense but not overpowering.
A visit here wouldn't be complete without ordering some topokki. The Sinjeon Original Topokki ($10.99) comes with with Gochujang sauce and rice cake as the base but you can always customize it with various toppings.
I opted for sausages ($2.99 for five) and fish cakes ($2.99) for extra meatiness, along with a blanket of stretchy cheese ($2.99).
The Cream Udon ($14.99) is a Korean twist on the classic carbonara pasta. Chewy udon noodles are immersed in a cream-based sauce accompanied by pork sausages, mushroom slices and onion, all finished with a sprinkle of fried garlic.
This dish, as well as all the others on the menu, have a subtle kick of heat that lingers on your palate.
Sinjeon Topokki is located at 377 Church St.
