Master Pot
Master Pot is a restaurant specializing in Cantonese Claypot Rice, also known as Bao Zai Fan.
Housed inside the Dragon City Mall in Chinatown, this comforting hot rice dish is all you need amidst the chill winter time.
The modern aesthetic design of the space is enriched with a playful yet nostalgic tap, thanks to the handcrafted lampshades featuring vintage plastic milk crates.
While it takes around 25 minutes of preparation time per order, this one-pot dish is made by cooking your selected toppings on top of the boiling rice, garnished with baby bok choy for a finishing touch.
Master Pot offers a selection of 17 claypot rice varieties along with an array of Hong Kong-style street foods.
Takeout options are also available, carefully packaged in foil containers to retain its warmth during delivery.
Their claypot rice for dine-in is served in a rattan basket to prevent direct heat from the side. Indulge in this sizzling delight by delicately pouring the sweetened soy sauce over the rice.
Then gently mix it for a perfect blend of meat and rice in every mouthful. Similar to Korean bibimbap, make sure to savour the best part by scooping the golden rice crust layer at the bottom.
Drawing inspiration from a famous comedy film "The God Of Cookery", this BBQ Pork with Salted Egg on Rice ($15.99) tantalizes with a balance of smoky and succulent pork slices. Take a morsel of salted egg each time to prevent any overpowering flavours.
The assorted Preserved Meat on Rice ($14.99) is a marriage of cured pork belly, savoury pork sausages and rich liver sausages. These thinly sliced fatty bites permeate their oils onto a bed of fluffy rice, creating a truly satisfying dining experience.
My personal favourite is the Preserved Meat with Steamed Pork Patty on Rice ($14.99), where the inclusion of thick and tender pork patty elevates the overall meatiness with every bite.
The well-seasoned ground beef imparts a robust and firm texture to their Beef with Poached Egg on Rice ($14.99). Topped off with the addition of raw egg, savour this hearty dish by mixing it thoroughly, allowing the residual heat to partially cook the egg for a creamier mouthfeel.
For sharing, this Chinese Style Marinated Assorted Platter ($8.99) comes with chicken wings, hard-boiled eggs and tofu that perfectly absorbs the rich braised sauce, delivering a savoury and aromatic profile.
Stuffed Eggplants, Bell Pepper and Tofu ($8.99) is an iconic street food in Hong Kong. Generously packed with a mixture of fish and shrimp paste, these pan-fried pieces are soft, juicy and flavourful, all finished with a soy sauce glaze.
Master Pot is located at 280 Spadina Ave Unit C 2/F.
