The Loop Creamery
The Loop Creamery is a shop specializing in frozen custard treats made from scratch.
Made from the exact same recipe as ice cream, but incorporating eggs into the mix, frozen custard is just as delicious, but thicker.
If you like the idea of a more viscous ice cream, Loop Creamery serves it in cones, sandwiches, and sundaes too.
Named after the nearby Lakeshore Loop, this small shop is an offshoot of Woody's, the popular local burger hub sitting right next door.
Initially a catering outpost, then Woodfired Sandwiches, this small space decided to change gears in 2019 and focus exclusively on summertime treats made frozen custard.
Using a basic recipe of six ingredients—milk, cream, eggs, sugar, salt, and a little vanilla extract—the custard mixture is fed into a special machine, which churns out the custard with a bit of air pressure to produce something that's creamier, denser, and less cold.
With the exception of one vegan option (a coconut banana flavour), there are about eight rotating flavours which use this simple concoction as its base.
The next step is deciding how you want to eat your frozen custard; there's over 27 toppings to deck out your treat with, and a number of house-baked goods to sandwich it with .
There's six sundaes here, from which you can try combos like the Toronto Trash Panda ($7.60).
This ridiculously decked-out and delicious treat comes with vanilla-flavoured custard, sprinkles, peanut butter cups, Oreos, brownies, salted caramel, and chocolate sauce. They come in one standard size, with two scoops of custard.
A list of "Concrete" options, which are basically Loop's take on a Blizzard, cost $7 each.
The Waffle Toffee Crunch comes with Skor pieces, waffle cone bits, and salted caramel on top of the ice cream of your choice.
An ice cream cookie sandwich is $5.90. Pick from a few different cookie options like the chocolate chip, the M&M Rainbow, a Double Chocolate Chunk, or a Toffee Chocolate.
We opt for a Rainbow cookie with the Unicorn ice cream: a mix of mango, blueberry, and raspberry.
Doughnut sandwiches are $6.15, and again, the world is your oyster.
If your goal is to make the prettiest combo possible, I suggest the sprinkle doughnut with the blue Cookie Monster custard, which is coloured with butterfly pea.
