Left Field Brewery Liberty Village
Left Field Brewery has a second Toronto location in Liberty Village and it comes with a mix of familiarity and a few changes compared to the original brewery and tap room on Wagstaff Drive.
Yes, the baseball love is still strong. Yes, there's a tap room with 16 in-house draught lines, but unlike its original spot, this space is a lot larger.
Left Field Brewery Liberty Village is located in the 40 Hanna building, where the 3 Brewers once was, and spans two storeys high.
It aims to be a sports bar for everyone, where people can unwind at communal tables and enjoy a game (whether it's baseball or not) on one of their many TVs.
There's also a kitchen — something that's not in its first location— that serves baseball-themed meals. The menu items are inspired by the food owners Mandie and Mark Murphy had at ballparks across America.
The Beef on Weck sandwich ($15.00) is particularly inspired by the trips the Murphys took to Buffalo to watch minor league baseball games. It's made with roast beef, horseradish mayo and custom-made caraway seed and sea salt Kimmelweck buns from COBS Bread.
Another baseball-themed menu item is the Yinz Brothers Sandwich ($17.00). It's similar to the sandwiches Mandie and Mark had while watching the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball games. What makes this sandwich stand out in particular is the fries that are added, which gives it a crunchier texture.
Loaded fries (all of them are priced at $14.00) are also on the menu in a variety of styles, including buffalo chicken, donair, vegan chili and jerk chicken.
Other meals include hot dogs which — safe to stay — are much larger and stuffed with more toppings than what you'd normally get a baseball game.
The Chicago-ish Dog ($15.00) is a footlong beef hot dog that has yellow mustard, relish, tomatoes, pepperoncini and pickles. It's named "Chicago-ish" because Mandie says the hot dogs in Chicago are so particularly done, that any spin on the dish wouldn't be acceptable to those from the city.
There are also classic baseball-themed desserts like mini doughnuts and sundaes. One dessert that sticks out though is the deep fried vanilla ice cream ($12.00), which is crusted with cornflakes, slathered in caramel sauce, topped with whipped cream and sprinkles and placed in a little helmet.
It would be incorrect to not talk about the beer. Left Field Liberty Village's tap room has six in-house beers that are exclusive to its location, with a lot of them made in collaboration with other brewpubs.
The Drei Brauer Altbier ($9.25 for an 18 0z, $7.00 for a 13 oz and $4.00 for a 6 oz) for example is a nutty and bread-flavour beer that's made with Something In The Water Brewing and Big Rock Brewery.
There's also the DiMaggio English & American Hybrid Pale Ale (which is the same price as the Drei Brauer) that's made with Bar Volo.
These beers are made in the brewing tanks that are visible on the first and second floor of the space.
"Beer is at its absolute best when you're drinking it straight from the tank," says Mandie. "It doesn't have the opportunity to get oxidized. Serving beer directly from the tanks is in its most pristine state."
A lot of the Leslieville beers are also available on tap, including the citrusy, candy-like Squeeze Play: Cherry Pie ($9.75 for an 18 oz, $7.50 for a 13 0z and $4.00 for a 6 0z) and the mocha, coffee-like Blackburne Imperial Stout ($8.00 for a 13 oz and $4.00 for a 6 oz).
You can also purchase six ounce beer flights for $15.00, for any of the beers on tap.
There's also in-house sparkling water and non-alcoholic beers, iced teas, soft drinks and Pilot Coffee Roasters coffee.
A cold beer store is also there for those who want to quickly purchase a few beers on their way in or out of the establishment.
Left Field Brewery Liberty Village is located at 40 Hanna Ave.
