Ishq
Ishq is a vegetarian restaurant from the team behind Shaaz Indian Cuisine.
The dining room at this Scarborough restaurant is surprisingly spacious, with two tiers of seating and tables galore. Elegant paintings line the walls, which are painted in shades of blue and green.
Wooden furniture and decorative ferns help emphasize the restaurant's plant-based products. The vibe is classy, but not overly formal. Most visitors wear casual clothes and make friendly conversation, while servers in green and black uniforms carry trays to and from the kitchen.
Veggie lovers will find themselves spoiled for choice here: Ishq's menu is massive, not to mention entirely meatless.
Start your meal with the Veg Noodle Soup ($7.99), a savoury broth filled with noodles, broccoli, green onions and carrots.
It's one of the milder dishes on offer, but no less enjoyable for it.
The straight-forwardly named Manchurian ($14.99) is an Indo-Chinese appetizer topped with sauce and scallions.
Though these bite-sized morsels look a little like meatballs, they're actually made from a mix of paneer, mushrooms, cauliflower and baby corn.
They're also incredibly spicy. Though the first bite was deceptively mild, my eyes began to water before I could take another.
I'd suggest keeping a piece of naan, or at least a cold drink, nearby — especially if you plan on tackling this dish in a single sitting.
The Delhiwali Paneer Tikka ($14.99) is an artfully arranged collection of paneer cubes and pineapple slices, suffused with yogurt, lemon juice and Indian spices.
This dish is an interesting mix of sweet and spicy flavours. I never would have thought to combine fruit, cheese and hot sauce, but as proponents of pineapple on pizza have proven, it often pays to be adventurous.
The Plain Dosa ($8.99) is arguably one of the least flashy dishes on the menu. But for what it lacks in style, it makes up for in size.
This dosa, which comes curled into a large tube, spans the length of a small table and is even bigger once it's unwrapped. This thin, crispy crepe is served with warm sambar and three types of chutney.
True to its name, the Punjabi By Nature Sizzler ($14.99) comes in a sizzling skillet filled to the brim with rice and veggies, all tossed in butter sauce.
These veggies, which include broccoli, carrots, and peas, are served with a side of paneer, which has been marinated in yogurt and mustard oil.
The Jackfruit Biryani ($15.99) is a slow-cooked rice dish served in a golden bowl. With a texture similar to pulled pork, this is one meal that even hardcore carnivores will enjoy. The Gulab Ki Raani Sundae ($8.99) is an unusual sundae made with Queen of Roses and vanilla ice cream, and sweetened with condensed milk, rose syrup and gulkand.
The proverbial cherry on top is a mountain of whipped cream sprinkled with tutti-frutti pieces.
Though this dish's strong, potpourri-like scent can be a turn off for some, its complex flavour and subtle floral notes made it the highlight of my visit.
The Choco Brownie Sundae ($8.99) is a more conventional (though still decadent) dessert option.
Chocolate and vanilla ice cream, topped with chocolate chips and hot fudge, evoke a warm, chewy brownie, while banana slices and cornflakes give the dish its own distinct identity.
Finish it with a dollop of whipped cream and you have a satisfying end to a filling, multi-course meal.
Ishq is located at 2007 Eglinton Ave E.
