Honey B Hives
Honey B Hives is a cozy diner known for its cheap breakfasts and filling dinners. The restaurant has taken up the corner unit of its quiet plaza for nearly ten years.
The logo features a stylized "B" with googly eyes and insect wings, alluding to the restaurant’s beehive theme.
The decor takes this motif one step further, with cartoonish bumblebees and honeycomb patterns strewn across the red and yellow walls.
True to its name, Honey B Hives is buzzing with activity. During our visit, servers flitted from table to table, while customers loaded up on carbs and couples conversed loudly over coffee.
Though the diner claims to provide 24-hour service, Honey B Hives actually divides its day into two distinct periods: breakfast service, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and dinner service, from 6:30 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.
Our waitress explained that, while breakfast tends to be the main draw, both service periods are quite busy.
Honey B Hives specializes in wholesome, home-style meals, ranging from massive steaks to pancakes smothered in syrup. They also offer a wide selection of pasta dishes, as well as the option to build your own.
The Working B Breakfast ($16.99) is Honey B Hives' take on a breakfast sampler.
This hearty meal consists of three eggs, cooked however you like them, as well as pancakes, home fries and three meats of your choice.
Breakfast staples like sausage and ham can be found alongside more unusual options, such as turkey bacon and peameal. The Cinnamon French Toast ($10.99) is cut into six golden triangles and topped with powdered cinnamon.
Additional toppings, including chocolate chips, blueberries and Nutella, can be added for $1.99 each. We opted for sliced bananas, which not only brought colour to the meal, but texture and sweetness as well.
If you order breakfast between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., certain items (including the aforementioned French Toast) are available at a reduced price.
If you can't decide whether to order from the breakfast menu or the dinner menu, the Chicken Waffle ($14.99) is a great compromise.
Two Belgian-style waffles come dusted with icing sugar and topped with a huge piece of fried chicken.
Sides of maple syrup and whipped butter give the meal a little extra sweetness, but honestly, the seasoned chicken is flavourful enough to enjoy on its own.
The Jerk Shrimp Spaghetti ($19.99) was a standout dish, made with creamy jerk sauce and grilled shrimp.
Though not as fancy as pastas I've eaten in the past, it nevertheless took me by surprise with its spicy-sweet taste.
Warm, inviting and refreshingly low-key, Honey B Hives will have something to offer no matter what time you visit.Honey B Hives is located at 2816 Markham Rd.
