HanBingo
HanBingo is serving up famous Korean desserts in a space with vibrant hues and floral walls and ceilings.
The name "HanBingo" refers to stone ice storage from early South Korea. Owner Esteban Kim first started his dessert cafe business in Thailand and in moving to Toronto, he decided to share this frozen delight.
The key to a bowl of irresistible bingsu is to maintain a light mouthfeel. Following their recipes from Thailand, HanBingo's offerings are made of fresh fruit, as Kim believes it's a solid match with the snow-like texture of shaved ice.
All bingsu here is also made with lactose-free milk and homemade toppings, like red bean paste and rice cakes, and come in two sizes. While they're easily shareable, you might be tempted to keep it all for yourself.
I tried their classic injeolmi red bean ($15.99) bingsu. The sweet red bean paste and soft injeolmi rice cake, dusted with nutty soybean powder, is a straightforward yet flavourful combination.
Mango cheesecake bingsu ($16.99) with an adorable scoop of ice cream is an absolute must-try. Covered with perfectly-ripened mango slices, the natural sweetness and additional fruity notes help balance out the creamy and slightly tangy cheesecake cubes.
The true highlight, though, was this bibimbap bingsu ($19.99), the largest bingsu at HanBingo. Imitating the colourful sautéed vegetables in actual bibimbap, it's stacked with up to six kinds of seasonal fruits, with a faux sunny side-up egg made of jelly giving it a finishing touch.
Originating from a popular chain toast brand in South Korea, HanBingo's isaac toast is served with homemade kiwi sauce.
Together with the traditional Dabang coffee ($3.5), it makes a perfect breakfast combo.
For meat lovers, there's a Beef Galbi Mozzarella Toast ($11.90), which has a tender beef patty topped with crunchy shredded cabbage and melted mozzarella cheese.
Green Bear Gato is a green tea-based dessert inspired by traditional affogato ($21.99). Served with freshly-brewed green tea, you'll get to gently pour it over the bear-shaped ice cream and savour all the matcha flavour.
Further satisfy your sweet tooth with their Honey Butter Bread ($12), a golden brown square loaf that's garnished with whipped cream, powdered cinnamon, and caramel syrup drizzle.
HanBingo features cute interior design. The inside predominantly features Tiffany blue on the main floor giving the cafe a touch of freshness and elegance.
Downstairs, you can find Korean-style photo booths, a collaboration with Life Four Cuts.
Not to be ignored is their head-to-toe floral wall that's covered in pink roses.
HanBingo is located at 397 Spadina Ave.
