Golden Patty has been serving Toronto cheap and fast Jamaican classics for years. Reasonably-priced patties in myriad flavours like spicy beef, callaloo, curry shrimp and jerk chicken are go-to items here.

There’s much more than that though: you can also get classic platters of oxtail or ackee and saltfish, as well as a huge variety of baked goods from breads to cookies and pastries with a global range of influences.

The place is small, humble, and exactly where you’d expect some of the best patties in Toronto to be made.

Their grilled jerk chicken sandwich is just five bucks, zesty meat sandwiched between Golden Patty’s deliciously soft and sweet coco bread, topped with cooling creamy slaw.

Don’t let the spicy beef ($1.50) fool you with its simplicity: those patties are fiery. Luckily you can opt for an equally saucy, beefy mild version.

The patty sandwich ($4.35 + tax) is a Toronto must, your choice of patty (obviously we go beef) between coco bread with melty cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a healthy smearing of mayonnaise. Indulgent, satisfying, soft, flaky and crunchy, it’s sure to fill you up.

Oxtail ($11.99, $9.99 for a small portion) is one of the “lunch special” options, served on your choice of rice. We skip the white rice in a favour of an earthy mix with beans. Tear fatty chunks of oxtail meat off the bones and search for the extra gristly tip of the tail.

Doubles ($1.70) are a more veggie-friendly classic. Circles of dough are fried so they become fluffy, sandwiching a sort of chickpea curry that’s mild and soothing.

Everything is always made fresh here. As a hand scrawled sign behind the counter says, everything is baked fresh daily. Prices on baked goods are ridiculous too, fifty cents for a nine-grain bun.

Most rolls (corn, egg, whole wheat) are just 45 cents each or three for $1.25.

Wash it all down with some house ginger beer ($1.45 - $1.99), a pleasantly spicy but refreshing beverage.
