El Nahual Annex Food Hall
El Nahual is downtown at last. This longtime Mexican spot has been operating from its humble stand in Keelesdale for over a decade, but it's brought its phenomenal tacos to Annex Food Hall for all to enjoy.
As usual, owner Luis Hernandez makes his house corn tortillas from scratch, creating an impressively sturdy skin that can hold its contents totally rip-free.
The menu consists of 10 tacos at $4.50 each, including El Nahual's popular batter-less cod tacos served with slaw, and the crispy cheese tortillas stuffed with juicy black tiger shrimp.
The yucatan chicken is another standout, with chicken slow-braised in ancho, chipotle and Yucatan achiote. Barbacoa is spiced blade beff slow cooked and topped with an amazing El Nahual creation, the avocado salsa.
A perfectly suitable substitute for guac (shocking, I know), this delicate green sauce is an addictive combo when paired with baked chips.
