Diavola Pizza
Diavola Pizza is a rock and roll-themed pizza parlour from the team behind Slayer Burger.
Situated just around the corner from Slayer Burger's Yonge Street location, this restaurant opened at the end of 2023, replacing the roti shop that had previously occupied the space.
In keeping with Slayer Burger's punk rock sensibilities, most of Diavola's decor come in the form of spray-painted stencils and cork boards filled with polaroids.
A red, white and green colour palette emphasizes the restaurant's connections to Italian culture and cuisine.
The restaurant's logo marries these two aesthetics by combining a recognizable Italian hand gesture with the classic "devil horns" sign. This logo can be found on everything from the walls to the pizza boxes.Diavola's pizza flavours range from commonplace to crazy. Classic pizzas such as pepperoni and cheese are served alongside more unusual flavours, including mortadella sausage and truffles.
Individual slices are large and square and go for $3.49 each.
Pepperoni is one of the safer options for newcomers. This simple pizza is topped with mozzarella, oregano and huge slices of pepperoni. The Ana Sofia, named in honor of the owner's daughter, is another great choice.
Though mozzarella and parmesan are the only toppings, this pizza is far from plain. The cheeses are rich and gooey and offer a nice contrast to the thick, crispy crust.
The Diavola is an extra spicy pizza covered with 'nduja, hot sausage, pepperoncini, pickled onions and chili flakes. Oregano and basil are added to cut the heat, but don't detract from the slice's overall flavour.
Of all the pizzas I tried, this one was my favourite. The spice level was perfect and the onions brought in some much needed acidity. If any dish deserves to bear the restaurant's name, it's this one.
The Classic Margherita matches the pizzeria's tricolour decor with its toppings of confit cherry tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, basil leaves and pesto. The Mediterranean evokes Greek and Levantine cuisine through its use of grilled chicken, feta cheese and red peppers. The Slayer Pizza ($33) is composed of ingredients found in Slayer Burger's signature dish, resulting in a pizza that tastes just like a bacon cheeseburger.
Layers of cheddar and mozzarella are topped with burger beef, bacon, caramelized onions and Slayer Burger's signature sauce. The final touch is a dusting of black sesame seeds, which gives each bite an interesting crunch.
Make sure to save room for dessert. The Nutella Pizza ($27) is a unique pizza that uses nutella in lieu of tomato sauce and strawberries, toasted hazelnuts and mint instead of meats and vegetables.
Though I was initially skeptical of this dish, I was surprised to discover how well the toppings complimented the pizza dough. With the addition of the nutella, the dough tastes almost like cake batter!
With a name that conjures up images of demons and flavours that are downright heavenly, Diavola Pizza proves that variety is the spice of life.Diavola Pizza is located at 3 Glebe Road.
