Crazy Crepes
Crazy Crepes is a Japanese crepe chain with outposts worldwide. This location in Toronto is their first in Canada.
The restaurant serves over 50 varieties of Japanese crepes, which are thinner than the French variety, and eaten by hand, rolled up in paper cones rather than off plates with a knife and fork.
Like many Japanese cafes, the interior is like stepping into a wonderland.
There’s a loose merry-go-round theme with a pink and blue colour scheme, as well as Instagrammable wall graphics.
The Choco Bomb ($11.99) is a signature sweet crepe packed with fresh house whipped cream, chocolate ice cream and chocolate syrup, all spread evenly within the crepe for equal distribution, corn flakes stuffed at the bottom.
It’s topped off with white chocolate shavings, a cookie stick, a chocolate hazelnut cone, a chocolate square and chocolate popping candy that provides the explosive surprise twist in this dessert.
The Cheesy Volcano ($10.99) takes these kind of “crazy” twists to the next level, stuffed with an eccentric pairing of cheesecake and spicy Cheetos.
Though they are somewhat tied together by the theme of cheese, it’s hard to imagine anyone without a serious case of the munchies naturally gravitating toward this choice.
The odd mix of rich, spicy and crunchy is topped off with a cheese cream, torched grated cheese, and last but not least—a fine dusting of spicy Cheetos powder.
As for the crepes themselves, they are indeed incredibly thin, as well as elasticky and slightly sweet. The thinness and softness of the rolled crepes creates a pleasant layered texture, and the whipped cream is airy yet decadent.
The Crazy Deluxe ($10.79) is more basic, yet still the fanciest fresh fruit crepe, loaded with all the fruits they have: strawberry, kiwi, blueberry and banana, topped with fresh whipped cream and strawberry syrup.
Savoury crepes include a popular spicy crab stick sesame mayo ($9.79) with egg, grated cheese, lettuce, corn, capelin caviar, and sweet, soft crab stick, kind of like a seafood salad sandwich in a crepe. There are also ham and cheese, pork floss, tuna wasabi and honey mustard chicken varieties.
On top of the truly zany array of crepe options available here, you're also free to let your imagination run wild by adding scoops of vanilla, chocolate or green tea ice cream plus any number of a wide variety of toppings.
