The Butcher's BBQ
The Butcher's BBQ in Stockyards District may be Toronto's answer to the famous American Shake Shack chain.
Of the many low-key and off-the-map restaurants in Toronto that are holding and hiding some of the city's best-kept culinary secrets, this is one of those gems.
It's also owned and operated by the Bielak family of the Little Italy stalwart Grace Meat Market.
Located right outside the family's meat packaging plant (hence the name) this parked food truck without wheels is serving up hefty burgers, chicken sandwiches ($7.50), wings ($7.99) and the occasional taco.
Philly cheesesteaks ($7.99) are piled high with meat, cheese and onions while breakfast sandwiches are bursting at the seam with beef bacon and eggs.
There are two major pluses of having a butcher open a food stall. First, it's quality meats. Second, it's lower prices.
"We get the cheapest price on meat and we pass that value on to our customers. We want to make good food at a low cost," says Leslie Bielak.
The stall opened in June 2021 and is mostly visited by those working in the industrial area, but it's open from Monday to Saturday.
But as word of mouth spreads, Bielak says more and more customers are venturing down to the Stockyards - not traditionally considered a popping culinary area of the city - for a taste.
The best-selling item, the cheeseburger ($7.99), comes with a 100 per cent beef patty, lettuce, tomato, the option of beef bacon and of course, melted cheese. It's reminiscent of the Shake Shack iteration.
Daily specials sometimes include soft steak tacos, beef ribs or chicken tacos. You can also find gigantic briskets smoking on the grill.
Although it's not heavily advertised, all of the products are 100 per cent Halal.
Don't forget their signature French fries ($2.75-$4.00), long and crispy, it's a perfect salty companion to a hefty burger.
"If we're doing something I want to do it right. It's all really high quality, it comes from us," said Bielak.
