A1 Submarines
A1 Submarines offers a menu of cold cut and eggplant subs from its location at the back of its sister restaurant, Extra Burger.
The sandwich shop is situated on the quiet residential side street of Dovercourt in what used to be storage space for the Dundas West burger joint.
The low ceiling and wall panelling, as well as the signed posters of Wayne Gretzky, Mike Tyson, and the Dave Matthews Band all contribute to the uncanny feeling that you've just walked into somebody's basement.
At the same time, the tight quarters give off a bit of a bodega vibe with everything from candy bars, cereal boxes, packaged ramen noodles, sriracha, duct tape, screws, and a 'Staff beer fund' where you can drop your change lining the counters.
The menu, with usually just three to four sandwiches, is just as simple as the one you'll find at its sister burger restaurant.
The Cold Cut Combo ($12) is named for the combination of deli meats on the sub which include ham, turkey and capicola. It also comes with shredded lettuce, tomato, red onion, swiss cheese, mayo, oregano, oil and vinegar, and a bit of salt and pepper.
The Mortadella Pickle ($12) is another cold cut option that's prepared with the same toppings, except for Mortadella Italian sausage deli meat and plenty of dill pickles in place of the trio of cold cuts.
Meanwhile, the Eggplant Supreme ($12) features drained eggplant marinated in crushed hot chili peppers in place of the cold cuts.
They also have beef and vegetarian patties available for purchase from Patty King. You can get one on its own ($4) or have it as the World Famous Patty Sub ($8).
This delicious option comes with all the same toppings of the Cold Cut Combo, just sandwiched between either side of a warm beef or veggie patty.
A1 Submarines fits nicely into a neighbourhood already full of acclaimed restaurants and food joints, providing a laid-back space you can run to for all of your deli sandwich cravings.
