The tallest buildings that joined the Toronto skyline this year

Toronto's skyline was further transformed with dozens of tall towers in 2024, adding some impressive landmarks that have introduced new condo, rental, office, retail, and hotel space to the city over the last 12 months.

The city witnessed some impressive growth during this period, and while this year's round of completions wasn't quite as monumental as 2023's new additions, it was still another significant year of skyline growth.

Here are the five tallest buildings that joined the Toronto skyline in the last year:

Toronto House

Toronto's tallest new addition in 2024 was the Toronto House development at 19 Duncan Street. The mixed-use tower from developers Westbank Corp and Allied Properties REIT soars 58 storeys tall with a minimalist design from Hariri Pontarini Architects.

At a height of over 186 metres above Toronto's Entertainment District, the new addition is easily the tallest building completed in 2024, though it only ranks as the 31st tallest building in the city.

First proposed in 2015 and finally realized some nine years later, the project features a residential rental and hotel tower above a commercial and retail base featuring the meticulously restored facades of the old warehouse building that came before it, anchored by the international news media empire Thomson-Reuters.

Eight Cumberland

Not far behind Toronto House, the second-tallest building completed in Toronto in the last year was the new 51-storey condo tower at 8 Cumberland St from developer Great Gulf and Phantom Developments.

The architects—Alliance-designed tower rises 170 metres above the northwest corner of Yonge and Cumberland streets with minimalist glass facades above the preserved frontages of heritage buildings at street level.

Eight Cumberland introduced almost 400 residences to the posh Yorkville neighbourhood when it welcomed residents in 2024.

55C Condos

Just a few blocks southeast of the #2 building on this list, the third-tallest new building of 2024 was MOD Developments' 50-storey condo tower at 55 Charles St East.

Rising 167 metres, the tower's design from architects—Alliance features volumes of projecting white balconies that form a pattern on the building's dark facades.

The new development has added another 665 condominium units to the dense canyon of towers lining Charles Street East — a block that was populated by low- and mid-rise office and apartment blocks just a dozen years earlier.

Social at Church + Dundas

This new 52-storey condo tower at 215 Church Street clocked in as the third-tallest completion of the year, standing at a height of almost 165 metres.

Its architecture from RAW Design might not take home any design awards with its gimmicky balconies and run-of-the-mill finishes, but the new development from Pemberton Group has undoubtedly made an impact on views of Sankofa (formerly Yonge-Dundas) Square.

Residents are now populating the building's 604 condominium units, adding even more life to the blocks surrounding the already-lively public square to the west.

Nobu Residences Toronto

Nobu Residences Toronto's twin 45-storey towers tied for the fourth-tallest buildings completed in the last year, with the complex from Madison Group and Westdale Properties measuring almost 157 metres above Mercer Street.

Though the complex's luxury hotel is not set to open until spring 2025, the flagship Nobu Restaurant did open its doors in August 2024, just in time for the arrival of celebrity guests at the 49th annual Toronto International Film Festival the following month, and has quickly become the city's newest celeb hotspot.

The first residents began to move into the Teeple Architects-designed towers' combined 658 suites in 2024.

While these were the tallest buildings to wrap up construction in 2024, several under-construction buildings, like The One and Concord Canada House, already stand far taller than anything that was completed in the past 12 months and are gearing up to wrap construction in the coming year.

Another notable skyline addition is the new TD Terrace, which reached substantial completion in late 2023 but has had tenants move in through 2024.

With 2025 now dawning, a whole round of new tall buildings will join the city skyline in the coming year. The next 12 months will prove to be one of the most transformative periods of skyline growth in the city's history as the record for Canada's tallest building is expected to be broken twice by a pair of rising towers.
