Toronto landlord blasted for renting out bed with zero privacy for $800 per month

It's no secret that trying to find an affordable place to live in Toronto can be like trying to find a needle in a haystack, especially if you're looking to live alone or in proximity to transit stops, shopping centres, and restaurants.

As tenants continue to grapple with the city's sky-high rent, a select group of landlords continue to look for ways to appeal to those strapped for cash, including renting out less-than-ideal accommodations or spaces that offer zero privacy.

As a result, "horror rentals" continue to regularly pop up on social media platforms like Reddit, where users consistently blast landlords who they claim are seeking to take advantage of tenants desperate for housing.

The latest listing to go viral on Reddit is this "furnished bedroom" for $800 per month in Toronto. At first glance, many users thought the landlord was advertising a studio space, however, many quickly discovered that the bed was actually located in the living room of a shared apartment.

At the time of publication, the Reddit thread has amassed over 250 upvotes and nearly 100 comments.

So he’s charging $800 for a bed in the middle of his apartment…..

"I was like 'bruh, this isn't bad at all, 100 per cent I'd take that for $800 a month,' then I realized from the comments it's a shared apartment space," one person wrote.

"I don't want to wake up to you brewing coffee while I'm in my undies, or vice versa — tiptoeing around the apartment trying not to wake you up 'cause it would piss you off and you might just kick me out. F*CK that."

Others rightfully pointed out that the city's gruelling rental market means that some tenants are forced to choose price over privacy.

"Would be great if it were a studio since rent is so high everywhere else, terrible since it sounds like they ran out of bedrooms and decided to make one in the common areas," one user chimed in.

"LOL at everyone that is ignoring the 'bed in our home.' Jesus guys this isn't a studio for $800, it's a fucking bed with a tiny little plastic divider, no room, or walls or roof to yourself."

Unfortunately, this isn't the only alarming listing in Toronto that was shared across social media in recent months.

In another example, a Toronto landlord was slammed for attempting to rent out an actual closet for $750 per month. Photos of the listing show the closet packed with a bed and TV, leading some Reddit users to draw comparisons to Harry Potter's tiny cupboard under the stairs
