McEwan Yonge & Bloor
McEwan Foods is a boutique grocery store named for Chef Mark McEwan with multiple locations throughout the GTA, this one a subterranean food hall concept.
There are more prepared foods at this location than any other, with stations for coffee, carved meats, sushi and pizza.
Decked out in McEwan royal purple, this location has a sleek, moody look to it, a central dining area seating 80 at round tables with rows of circular lamps creating a pattern effect overhead.
Prepared food stations wrap around the store with sections like bakery items and produce in the middle.
An all-day cafe opens at 7:30 a.m., with Lavazza coffee and fresh pressed juices produced in collaboration with Refuel.
The cafe station also does Refuel smoothies starting at $6.25.
During morning hours from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., the hot table is stocked with breakfast items like bacon, eggs and sausage. Everything is sold by weight for $3.15/100g throughout the day, with lunch and dinner options like sweet chilli chicken and fried rice.
Pre-made sandwiches include keto options like strip loin, avocado, roasted red pepper and olive oil mayo on an Unbun ($11.99).
A carvery station serves meats carved to order by the pound, such as P.E.I. prime rib ($26.99/lb), slow roasted pork shoulder ($22.99/lb), roasted strip loin ($32.99/lb), and slow braised beef short ribs ($22/lb).
All prepared foods are made in a kitchen directly adjacent to the store and just as large.
Rotisserie chicken is prepared right behind the counter where it's sold whole or pulled in made-to-order sandwiches ($11.99).
Create "Bloor Street Meal Deals" by choosing a protein and two sides from the prepared food counter ($14.99) or carvery ($17.99) with upcharges for certain proteins.
A meal deal of prime rib and two sides goes for $19.99, though I'd recommend bringing carvery meals home or bringing cutlery to the dining hall, as disposable utensils that can't handle the thick slice of juicy meat. All prepared foods are paired with some sort of sauce or garnish, in this case horseradish and a peppercorn sauce.
For our two sides we go with a family recipe potato salad loaded with cornichons and onion.
There's an upcharge for sesame-crusted tuna, which we pair with a tomato and bocconcini salad and a charred broccoli salad with lots of crunchy pumpkin seeds and pomegranate seeds.
The majority of produce at McEwan is organic, with lots of convenient options for chopped, diced and even spiralized veggies. Embracing eco-friendly and waste reducing practices, any produce that would otherwise go to waste is donated.
This location also has a Fabbrica outpost and much more.
