Beast Games from YouTube star MrBeast is filming in Toronto this month

Beast Games, the new reality gameshow by YouTube superstar and chocolate bar peddler, MrBeast, is about to start filming in Toronto — and the production is bringing along plenty of baggage.

Jimmy Donaldson, the YouTuber better known as MrBeast, is a giant in every sense of the word. On the video streaming platform, he boasts a whopping 308 million subscribers, with videos regularly drawing in over 100 million views — and he's now setting his sights on television.

Partnering up with Amazon Studios, the YouTuber announced the upcoming show, Beast Games, in March of 2024, before entering its first phase of filming in Las Vegas earlier this summer.

According to a report by Deadline, the Toronto leg of filming is set to begin in early August, with the entirety of shooting taking place at Downsview Park Studios.

The show draws on Donaldson's own YouTube channel, where he frequently hosts challenges where contestants must survive tasks like facing their biggest fears or living for 1oo days in a nuclear bunker in exchange for cash prizes anywhere from tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"The new show [...] is set to become the biggest reality competition series, where 1000 contestants will compete for a $5 million prize," reads a release from Amazon announcing the production, boasting what is allegedly the single largest reward for a television game show in history.

While details on the production's timeline are fuzzy, contributers on a Reddit post claim that the show is currently filming in Las Vegas, while the Toronto set preps for filming to begin in the coming weeks, an apparent delay from the original intended mid-July start date.

According to Deadline, Toronto will serve as the backdrop for the second stage of the competition, with the 1000 remaining competitors from an original 2000 who have remained in the game thus far conitnuing the fight for the $5 million prize.

The Toronto leg of the show's production comes as Beast Games and Donaldson come increaisngly under fire as allegations of unsafe, unfair and abusive working conditions at the Las Vegas have begun to surface online.

YouTuber Rosanna Pansino, a past competitor on Donaldson's channel, has been seemingly leading the charge on airing out the allegations against the production, receiving, in her words "hundreds of messages a day" from the 1000 contestants who have since been eliminated from the show and crew members on the production.

In one video, she alleges that the production will not be working with IATSE (the union that represents film and television crews internationally) in an effort to skirt the union's strict safety guidelines.

In another video, Pansino relays accusations from one of the show's competitors, who claims contestants were underfed, denied medical attention and deprived of sleep during the initial round of filming, alongside alledging that crews were made to work up to 20 hours consecutively.

According to a recent report by the New York Times, though, a representative for MrBeast told the publication that "virtually all of those invited to Toronto" for the second phase of filming had agreed to come along.

For now, only time will tell whether the controversial conditions follow the production over the border, or whether the Canadian team behind the production is able to put a handle on the allegedly unsafe but definitely controversial show.
