Cate Blanchett is coming back to Toronto this summer

Exciting news has knocked on Toronto's door. TIFF has just announced that Cate Blanchett will be returning as the recipient of the TIFF Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award at the 2024 TIFF Tribute Awards this 2024 season.

Blanchett is no stranger to Toronto. Back in 2019 while filming Ms. America, a small-screen leading role which she  produced through Dirty Films, a prodcution company she co-runs, she popped up all over the city including a visit to the Gladstone Hotel for West End Drag Brunch.

Bringing her daughter Edith Vivian Patricia Upton as her date, they spent her day off from filming by watching a spectacular show and taking pictures with Toronto native drag star Miss Moço.

Blanchett will be making her return to Toronto for the TIFF Tribute Awards, Sunday, September 8 at Fairmont Royal York Hotel, with proceeds going towards TIFF's Every Story Fund, which champions diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in film.

Recipients of this award are described as leading women in the film industry who not only demonstrate great success but advocate the careers of others in the film industry but who have also paved the way for the next generation (An award of a lifetime if I do say so myself).

It's no surprise that Blanchett will be receiving this award. As an actress and producer in the film industry, she has surely left her mark in her respective areas.

Blanchett has been creating and staring in films with roles that tell integral stories to keep conversations about women moving in the right direction for many years now. Films such as Carol, Tár, and I'm not there, have been defining films that do exactly that.

If we are talking tangible acclimation, Blanchett has received 2 Academy Award wins for The Aviator and Blue Jasmine, and a list of other honours that include four BAFTAS and four Golden Globes.

Along with that she does her fair share of advocating outside of the on screen world.

Blanchett's production company, Dirty Films puts proof in pudding. Their recent projects include Proof of Concept, a company which supports emerging women, trans, and nonbinary filmmakers.

Along with this long list of successful feats she is a Global Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, a member of the Earthshot Prize Council and a leading advocate for the cultural industries, human rights and the environment.

If you want to get a quick look at Blanchett in all her glory she will also be participating in an In Conversation With... event. This events offers audiences an intimate look into Blanchett's natable career.

Along with the announcement of Blanchetts award, TIFF has also announced the attendence of Oscar-nominated actress Amy Adams who will receive the TIFF Tribute Performer Award, Canadian filmmaker and screenwriter David Cronenberg, who will be recognized with the Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award, and Korean Canadian actor and producer Sandra Oh who will serve as the inaugural Tribute Awards Honorary Chair.

But wait, there's more!

Announcements of filmmakers making their world premier at this years TIFF have rolled out.

Icon Elton John will be letting viewers in on an exclusive look at his life at the screening of 'Elton John: Never Too Late'. Tom Hiddleston plays the title character in 'Life of Chuck', and Lebron James produced coming-of-age film 'Rez Ball' about Indigenous basketball are only some of the highly anticipated films being shown at this years TIFF.

If you're hoping to get a good look at Blanchett and the other stars who will grace this years red carpet from September 5-15th, tickets for TIFF ’24 go on-sale to TIFF Members by level beginning on Friday, August 16.
