Toronto just got another new IMAX theatre
People looking to catch an IMAX flick in Toronto now have a new location at which to enjoy the elevated and immersive movie-going experience.
Cineplex has just brought IMAX offerings to its Yonge-Eglinton theatre, which will now serve as only the seventh venue in Toronto with the exclusive technology. The last time we got a new IMAX auditorium was in 2017.
IMAX's large-format, high-resolution presentations are known for being superior both visually and aurally, and are hailed as the ultimate way to take in certain films. Blockbusters such as Oppenheimer and Dune were shot specially with IMAX cameras, and made to be watched on the brand's bigger, curved screens.
Though Yonge-Eglinton has showtimes available for these enhanced-experience screenings as of last week, movie buffs are noting online that some may not consider the cinema a "true IMAX" outlet due to the fact that it won't have the capability to screen films in 70mm, and is an upgrade of an existing space.
This is the same case at Cineplex's Yonge-Dundas and Empress Walk locations, which also have IMAX, but in the slightly lesser digital form that some aficionados have come to jokingly refer to as "lie-max."
I reached out to Cinpelex via a DM and 1) I'm amazed that they actually responded to little old me 2) it's a refit of an existing theatre and doesn't have 70mm or laser capability, so sounds like it's like it'll be similar to the IMAX screens at Yonge & Dundas, Empress Walk, etc. https://t.co/MkMMXGnAPr

Cineplex Yonge-Eglinton will also continue to carry its existing UltraAVX, D-BOX, VIP and RealD 3D experiences. The IMAX movie of choice at the time of publication is Marvel's Madame Web.
IMAX is also available in the city at the Scotiabank Toronto theatre, the Ontario Science Centre, the temporarily shuttered Ontario Place Cinesphere, and Cineplex's Eglinton Town Centre location.
