Anthropologie shutting down its most breathtaking store in Toronto

A major Anthropologie location in Toronto will soon be shutting down, leaving one of the city's most unique retail spaces up for grabs.

Queen West, which was once one of Toronto's most predominant shopping hubs for major retailers, is taking another hit in the new year, with news breaking that U.S.-based fashion retailer Anthropologie will soon be vacating their long-standing location on the street.

First making its Canadian debut with its still-operational location at Shops at Don Mills in 2009, the retailer later went on to open locations in Yorkville, at Yorkdale Mall and, in 2015, their breathtaking Queen West location, which took over a 7,000 square-foot former church near the intersection of Queen and Euclid.

All exposed brick walls, soaring ceilings and stained glass windows, the building was an aesthete's dream, perfectly blending with the brand's proclivity for boho and rustic stylings.

In 2019, the retailer shuttered the Yorkville location, which later became home to KITH, and the Yorkdale location followed in short succession, leaving only Don Mills and Queen West, as well as an Oakville location just outside the city.

Now, Anthropologie's ranks in Toronto are set to fall again, with the news emerging that the Queen West location — undisputedly the most unique the retailed has ever operated in the city — will soon be closing its doors for good.

A sales representative confirms with blogTO that the store is, in fact, closing down and that its last day in business will be Jan. 12, so there's still time to get some last-minute holiday shopping done or find your New Year's Eve outfit before they move out.

The representative also notes that the closure isn't due to a lack of business in the area, but rather a shift for the business as it explores opportunities for smaller boutique locations in downtown Toronto, though none have been confirmed as of yet.

At the time of publication, Anthropologie's corporate office has not responded to blogTO's request for comment.

Wasting no time to seek out a new tenant, the listing for the retail space has already emerged on CBRE's retail site, stating that the space will be available as of Spring 2025.

Who knows, maybe KITH will take the bait and open a second location in the city, or maybe, like the iconic former HMV space on Yonge, it has a future as a particularly expansive cannabis dispensary. On Queen West, it would only be fitting.

Anthropologie is located at 761 Queen West.
