Toronto's favourite Value Village about to close for condos but a new one is coming

A new condo development has long been slated for the site of what is largely considered to be Toronto's best Value Village, and it looks like the time has finally come for early demolition work to start on the store, as staff have posted its closure date.

Shoppers visiting the VV at 1319 Bloor St. W, at the corner of Lansdowne, are now being greeted with a sign alerting them that they only have until the end of this month to visit the location.

As sad as many will be to see the staple go, after August 31, local fans of the thrift chain will only have to wait a few weeks before a replacement store opens just down the street.

Though it was initially expected to debut sometime in August, a new full-sized Value Village store — no, not its less-liked "boutique" concept — will open its doors at 772 Dovercourt Road on Thursday, September 26.

Many have pointed out that the building it will call home is surprisngly nice, with a unique and award-winning combination of heritage and modern architecture.

Formerly a Canada Post sorting facility, it was renovated and expanded a few years ago by Superkul Architects to serve as the Proper TV headquarters.

In the interim, there are still Value Village locations at 924 Queen St. E in Riverdale, 2119 Danforth Ave. in East York, 1020 Islington Ave. in Etobicoke, 605 Rogers Road in Earlscourt, two in North York four in Scarborough.

There are also boutique locations at Queen and Bathurst, Bloor and Madison Ave., 700 Lawrence Ave. W and Yonge and Eglinton, though people seem to perceive these stores as more of a rip-off than even the traditional format.
