Sportswriting is what you make of it. There are the Adrian Wojnarowskis of the world, with all the inside reporting; the Zach Lowes, who diagram plays in vivid detail; the Mirin Faders bringing you inside the mind and the heart of an athlete; and the Baxter Holmeses, who captivate audiences with their storytelling. It all starts with understanding the game, knowing the characters within, and finding the story you want to tell.
This workshop will be split into four classes. We'll watch a game together and learn to tell a story using quotes, stats, and film. We'll explore profile writing and getting personal with your favourite players. I'll introduce you to social and new media reporting. There will be special guest lecturers, including Blake Murphy of The Athletic and Alex Wong of Yahoo Sports.
This course will show you what's possible in sportswriting, will teach you how to take your passion and infuse it into your writing, and, most importantly, will help you grow as a writer and a fan.
WILLIAM LOU is the lead Toronto Raptors reporter for Yahoo Sports Canada. He hosts the “Raptors Over Everything” podcast, and appears in the weekly video series "Run it Back" with Alex Wong. When he's not obsessing about the defending NBA champions, he can typically be found talking shit on Twitter about the other 29 teams, or inventing new ways to cover the sport of basketball from a fan's perspective.
