Weirdos at Christie Pits Film Festival
Toronto auteur Bruce McDonald’s WEIRDOS begins as a seemingly straightforward story of a pair of teenage lovers in 1970s Nova Scotia hitchhiking to the “big city” of Sydney, but is quickly complicated by budding queer sexuality, family trauma, and life advice from the ghost of Andy Warhol (no joke). McDonald’s disarmingly tender film is an ode to the pain and pleasure of growing up and the complexity of parent-child relationships.
Anna Maguire’s quirky short YOUR MOTHER AND I focuses on the relationship between a daughter and a father who never stops telling big fish stories about her late mother, while Toronto Director Charlie Tyrell’s deeply personal documentary MY DEAD DAD’S PORNO TAPES uses ingenious animation techniques to literally and figuratively unpack his conflicted feelings about his deceased father. This programme also features a who’s-who of iconic Canadian actors, including Molly Parker, Don McKellar, Cathy Jones, and Julia Sarah Stone.
