An afternoon of sound by exhibiting artists Carson Teal and Xuan Ye, and performers Korea Town Acid and Oscar Chiu performed within the landscape of Soft Refractions. For wave, Teal and Ye will animate the spaces in which their respective works are exhibited. Korea Town Acid and Oscar Chiu provide a textural blend of experimental beats. wave invites participants to find the space between frequencies and to engage in a spectrum of sonic experience.

CARSON TEAL

Carson Teal is a Canadian multidisciplinary visual artist and experimental producer represented by Pari Nadimi Gallery in Toronto, Canada. Teal is known for his eloquent use of visuals and audio, creating environments that transcend the confines of physical space. He interlaces rich soundscapes with elements of video projection mapping over assembled and found objects to create immersive and mesmerizing atmospheres. Teal’s multi-disciplinary practice allows for opportunities to be fully engaged in the moment of the piece or performance, creating almost synesthetic memories of his work.

XUAN YE

Xuan Ye is an interdisciplinary artist, performer, and researcher whose body of work synthesizes research-creations in music, visual and performing arts. X recently completed an MFA degree in Visual Arts from York University and obtained an MA in Media and Cultural Studies at New York University in 2013. Lauded as “one of Canada’s most exciting voices in textual soma” by OBEY Convention, X has had works exhibited and performed internationally, at venues including Goethe-Institut (CHN), Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Art Center (US), Trinity Square Video (CA), the Wrong Biennale (URL), AGYU (CA), Times Museum (CHN), Bronx Art Space (US), Galleri CC (SE), among others.

Performer, researcher, and interdisciplinary artist Xuan Ye’s improvisations synthesize music, visual and performing arts. Lauded as “one of Canada’s most exciting voices in textu(r)al soma” by OBEY Convention, she has had works performed and exhibited in North America, Europe, and China. Her newest performance setup delves into the idea of feedback—manipulating electronics to turn the Great Hall of 918 Bathurst into a changing, interactive sound installation.

KOREA TOWN ACID

Korean-born, Toronto-based classically trained pianist, producer and vocalist Jessica Cho is Korea Town Acid, who has been creating a buzz in the Toronto dance music community. Her focused, captivating live shows and eclectic DJ sets transform the dance floor into a wholly unique avant-garde journey. Her unique sound palette is a timeless fusion of raw gritty techno, funk, and free jazz.

ONLINE THREAT

Oscar Chiu is a classically trained pianist and violinist who is expanding his musical practice into the realms of electronic music under the pseudonym online threat. online threat first existed as an entity of the web; a medium for discovering and showcasing exciting creatives from around the world. In its current form, online threat is a much more personal project, exploring the emotive sonic possibilities of field recordings and synthesis while questioning the existing boundaries of genres in both composition and DJ sets.
