URBAN BEEKEEPING 101- An Introduction to Beekeeping in Toronto
On February 17, 2018, the Toronto Beekeepers Collective (TBC) will hold a daylong workshop for Toronto’s urban bee-curious.
The TBC will conduct the annual educational day of exploration featuring presentations from honeybee experts and urban beekeeping enthusiasts. Registration is $50 per person (discounted rate of $40 for students and seniors with identification).
Online registration is open now at bees101.eventbrite.ca for URBAN BEEKEEPING 101, to be held at Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge Street, registration begins at 9:00 a.m and workshops and speakers are between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
URBAN BEEKEEPING 101 explores a wide range of beekeeping topics such as: how urban beekeeping is different than rural beekeeping and how to encourage a healthy bee environment in your own backyard or balcony; what urban beekeepers do; how and where to start your own hives; interactive hive and equipment demonstrations; what you need to know about queen bees, drone bees, and worker bees; disease issues and management; the best plants for a bee friendly garden, apitherapy and honey flavour profiles.
Several presentations will also review interesting urban beekeeping practices and beekeeping resources in Toronto and Ontario. During the breakout sessions, attendees will have access to purchasing a variety of beekeepers tools, equipment, and products from the hive: honey tasting treats, local honey, beeswax candles, and skin care products.
Funds raised by the admission fee will go to further the educational work of the Toronto Beekeepers Collective. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and the official program commences at 10 a.m. Lunch and light snacks are included.
