“The feminine seen through the male gaze is strongly represented”… was the response by the artist to the question “what is a woman”. These recent paintings are the result of the artist’s own reflections on his “seeing what women have endured in their lives”. Perceived ideas and norms in relationship to “what is a woman” have been chronicled through generations within long established cultures.
At times using mythology and allegory as a creative orientation, the artist unveils the timeless and universal desire for connection. When envisioning this process, it was important to represent the “vulnerability, strength, and beauty” of women. And also, to examine the portrayal of the masculine as told in the Greek myth of Pygmalion—a sculptor who falls in love with his own creation, which he names Galatea. Skilfully portrayed, each artwork is layered with meaning and probes the depths of human emotion, creating compelling visual narratives.
There is a poetic passage that bridges the gap between the present moment and those echoes of the past. As individuals, we embark on a journey towards personal liberation, exploring both self-love and our place in the world to take solace in “Beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know”. — John Keats.
The selection process was assisted by J. Lynn Campbell.
