The silt
Neil Young, The Beach Boys, and Captain Beefheart have died, decomposed, and deposited themselves in the banks of the future river. You’re digging there for gold and find instead The silt: Ryan Driver (nylon-string guitar, drums, analog synth), Marcus Quin (simultaneous bass and drums, lap steel), Doug Tielli (elec. guitar, bass, trombone, melodica). They’re cooing, growling, fumbling, and being generally angelic.
The silt banded together in Parkdale, Toronto in 1999, bringing their impulse to make strange sounds and love for pan-spectrum pop song-writing together, interweaving the spirit of experimentalism with detailed roots melodies, three-part vocals, rich psychedelic soul harmony, and sweet surreal words.
Over the following decade they performed and released 3 records: Red Whistle and Earlier Ways to Wander on Rat Drifting in 2002 and 2004, and Cat’s Peak, which was originally released on Fig Records in 2007 and was re‐released on UK’s Fire Records in 2009.
In 2010 they went on hiatus during which time both Ryan and Doug have released a few records under their individual names with the U.K. label Tin Angel. The silt has performed together very rarely since then.
Pursuit Grooves
Vanese Smith is an experimental electronic sound artist, educator, visual artist, and DJ who produces soulful, genre-bending bass music, with special interests in creative sound sources, sampling, and rhythmic construction. She has performed internationally at theaters and festivals (MUTEK, Sonar, Movement) over the last two decades in support of over a dozen sonically adventurous album releases. She has been featured in publications such as NOW, Musicworks, Exclaim, Afropunk, Spin and more.
The Burning Hell
The Burning Hell is the ongoing musical project of songwriter Mathias Kom and multi-instrumentalists Ariel Sharratt, Jake Nicoll, and Maria Peddle. Their densely populated genre-shifting songs are packed with an abundance of literary, historical, cultural, and pop-cultural forebears, heroes, and villains. They move with heavy rhyme and a light step, incorporating a fixation on apocalypse and ruin into work that celebrates participation in a mutually created, surprising, and even occasionally beautiful world. Which is to say they’re good dance partners and they want to dance with you.
The Burning Hell are DIY in the best possible sense—underlining the “do”—and they’ve famously ventured to every out-of-the-way island and inland neglected by the less adventurous, emphasizing presence and connection across latitudes, longitudes, and time, affirming a commitment to the political power of sharing music. It is a profoundly optimistic gesture delivered by way of killer tunes, exuberant hooks, and joyful live performances.
New Chance
New Chance is a Toronto-based artist, musician and astrologer. Her work in music includes remixing, scoring for film and video, and a long time collaborative practice in dance. In 2023 New Chance released an art edition mantra record, Peaceful Mind (Personal Records) and in 2021 she released her full-length LP, Real Time (We Are Time).
Shotgun Jimmie
Shotgun Jimmie is a musician, educator, and interdisciplinary artist based in Brandon, Manitoba. He’s been touring regularly and releasing records on You’ve Changed Records since 2009. Jimmie cut his rock & roll teeth in the early 2000’s, as part of the seminal east coast indie outfit Shotgun and Jaybird. He has appeared on recordings by John K. Samson, Christine Fellows, Joel Plaskett and By Divine Right.
