The History of Kensington Market
The History of Kensington Market - January 9th, 7:30pm
Join us at Steelworkers' Hall 25 Cecil St. on Tuesday 9 January 2018 at 7:30 pm for a presentation by the Kensington Market Historical Society on the history of Kensington Market.
Kensington Market is a richly multicultural downtown neighbourhood in Toronto. Home to successive waves of immigration throughout the 20th century, the marketplace developed as Victorian homes were transformed into shops, first by mainly Jews and Eastern Europeans, then by groups of immigrants from Italy, Portugal, the Caribbean, Latin America and Southeast Asia. Typically, people both lived and worked in the Market, thereby creating a vibrant street life that continues today.
Kensington Market Historical Society gathers, studies, preserves, and disseminates information pertaining to the history of the Kensington Market area. It holds public events, publishes a newsletter, and undertakes research and other projects.
