Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio are formerly married petroleum engineers who are drafted to assist a gung-ho Navy SEAL, portrayed by Michael Biehn, with a top-secret recovery operation. Their mission: to recover a nuclear sub that has been ambushed and sunk under mysterious circumstances in some of the deepest waters on Earth.

In a parallel storyline, a civilian oil rig crew is recruited for a search and rescue effort when a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks. As one of the divers embarks on this perilous mission, he finds himself on a spectacular odyssey 25,000 feet below the ocean’s surface. There, he confronts a mysterious force with the potential to either change the world or bring about its destruction.
