Paul Newman is a composer and saxophonist. These days he plays with Dust, the Woodchoppers, the Starfires and in duos with Karen Ng, Heather Segger and Alexandra Spence. He has had an ongoing solo music project since 2008, which has resulted in his CD, Music for Solo Soprano Saxophone. He has a CD upcoming featuring duo compositions, performed with Karen Ng and Heather Segger.
See Through Trio is composed of Tania Gill piano, Karen Ng saxophone, and Pete Johnston bass. Based in Toronto, the members of the trio share an interest in collective improvisation and collaborative composition. See Through Trios music encompass a diverse range of influences, from the 1960s jazz avant-garde of Carla Bley and Ornette Coleman to psychedelic British folk. These distinct sounds are connected by the playful deconstructionist spirit of jazz. See Through Trio performs frequently in Toronto, and has toured the East and West coasts of Canada. Their debut CD Our Own Devices was released in June 2007; Lines and Spaces followed in 2009 and Near Northern Static in 2012. Parallel Lights is their first album with Karen Ng, who joined the group in 2013. It was produced by Jean Martin, features nine new compositions by Pete Johnston, and is covered by some beautiful artwork by Mike Smith.
See Through 5 is a new project that adds former Muskox colleagues Jake Oelrichs drums and Mike Smith synth to the See Through Trio orbit. This will be the first performance of a suite of new compositions by Pete Johnston for this group.
