SOARING HIGH
Works by Pegah Shah
August 17-28th
Creativity is the main driver for my art works. I am inspired by artists like Rene Magritte in creating art pieces that utilize real elements of life and transform them to a more surreal composition. All my art works convey a message and a deeper thought process in the hope of raising societal awareness to realities of life or to simply share common hopes, despairs and values.
I have created most of this collection in 2020 right after the COVID-19 pandemic hit our world. As a physician working in a hospital and providing care to the sickest COVID-19 patients, I witnessed how lives were shattered and how society came to a halt. For months I was searching for a purpose and for a venue to channel my inner feelings without speaking about them. I felt we were all locked not only in our physical space but also in our metaphysical world.
In this collection, I enjoyed working with earth tones and layering them to build my desired colours. I was inspired by pictures of birds and tiles found in books or online. My medium is either colour pencils or watercolour on paper. Some pieces depict tiles from old and historic sites from Tehran which simply symbolize my roots. My birds have wings but they may not be able to fly away yet. They still keep dreaming of soaring high.
