Sevim Onen: 40 Years - A Retrospective
At the age of 94 Sevim Onen is granting us a rare opportunity to see selections of her work spanning the last 40 years, including pieces held in private collections and never before seen by the public.
Ms Onen's work follows several distinct themes: motifs from Turkish folk art and culture, abstracts and semi-abstracts, Canadian and Turkish landscapes, and an ongoing love of nature and flowers. She also uses paint chips and collage to create tiny, intricate fantasy worlds.
Sevim Onen came to Toronto in 1960 with her husband and two children. She co-founded the Ankara Library with her late husband and friends, and has been a driving force in the Turkish community in Toronto, supporting other immigrants and artists like herself. A prolific painter, she has always given the profits of sale of her artwork to charity.
Her art career began relatively late in life, leading to an Honours BA in Fine Art from York University in 1979. She has had many solo and group exhibits in Toronto, Ottawa and İstanbul.
We look forward to sharing this beautiful work with you!
