Royal Stompbox: John Carpenter's Elvis - starring Kurt Russell!
Royal Stombox presents:
John Carpenter's ELVIS
7:30pm - Kurt, John & Elvis Preshow!
8:00pm ELVIS
Its Kurt Russells birthday this month, so Stompbox is celebrating the first ever team-up between legendary super-pals Kurt Snake Plissken Russell and director John Carpenter later to team up for ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THE THING, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, and ESCAPE FROM L.A.. Carpenters biopic of Elvis Presley was made just 18 months after the death of The King, and probably due to this still-raw immediacy and the fact that it was made for 70s prime time TV, it was decided to keep the story focused on the positives, stopping the narrative in 1969 before the barbiturates, weight gain, and general decline set in. Russell shines throughout, and deservedly was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor for this made-for-TV special.
The great Season Hubley plays Priscilla Presley, and she and Kurt were to became linked in real life, married one month after the ELVIS broadcast, and had one kid together before breaking up in 1983. Season never went on to the fame she deserved, but shes great here and amazing in Gary Shermans VICE SQUAD a few years later!.
Kurt Russells connection to Elvis began way back during his days as a child actor, with an uncredited part in Elvis Presleys IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLDS FAIR. Elvis character pays 10-year-old Kurt to kick him in the shin. Its so awesome.
