In 1984, synth-pop pioneer "I Feel Love" and Oscar-winning composer Giorgio Moroder Midnight Express, Cat People, American Gigolo introduced Fritz Langs silent sci-fi epic Metropolis to the 80s in a major way. A three-year crate dig with film archives around the world uncovered fabled lost footage in what was an historic achievement in film restoration. In the process, Moroder made the controversial decision to give the re-released version of Langs film a new, contemporary score featuring his own throbbing electronic beats and a pop music soundtrack featuring hitmakers of the early MTV era, including stand-out tunes from Freddie Mercury and Pat Benatar.
In addition, missing footage was re-edited into the film, intertitles were removed and replaced with subtitles and sound effects, and colour tinting was added, creating a hyper-vibrant new wave trip for Fritz Langs expressionistic masterpiece, set in a brutally stratified society of the future where the carefree son of a capitalist discovers the atrocious conditions of the factory slaves, falls in love with their pacifist defender who is replaced by a robot doppleganger, and eventually leads the workers rebellion.
Derided at the time it won a lot of Razzies, from where we stand in 2016, Moroders pulsing vision feels like an awesome master class in mash-up innovation, a Technicolor wonder thats unique, hypnotic, and loaded with great jams no one will judge you for crying during Pat Benatars Heres My Heart.
Come early for a massive Moroder pre-show! From Call Me to The Chase and Cat People, The Royals new music series Royal Stompbox will take you from here to eternity!
