Robert Wiens
Robert Wiens
6 March to 12 April 2014
Please join us for the opening on Thursday, 6 March from 7 to 9 p.m.
With this exhibition, Robert Wiens expands on an ongoing series of works depicting tree trunks. His meticulous, life-size watercolours, cropped tightly to a square or rectangular frame, brings us into close proximity to these trunks for careful study. But here, instead of living subjects, he has selected various logs in states of decay. Seeing them close up, the surfaces of these logs are interrupted by peeling bark, and patches of bright green moss and lichen. All of the logs originate from local regions: a hardwood forest near Algonquin Park, a conservation area close to the artist’s home in Picton Ontario, and the artist’s backyard—and supplement Wiens’ taxonomy of tree species from North America’s eastern forest of North America.
Susan Hobbs Gallery is open to the public Wednesday to Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and by appointment. The gallery is located at 137 Tecumseth Street, Toronto.
