Reel Girl Talk: Girl, Interrupted
Film: 6:30 PM
Discussion: 8:40 PM
Tickets: $12
Reel Girl Talk returns this May with an all-new event centred on women, film and mental health. Join us on Wednesday, May 17 the week after Mental Health Week in Canada for a screening of the 1999 adaptation of Susanna Kaysens memoir, followed by an intimate discussion about how it compares to the actual experiences of women dealing with mental illness and/or other mental health issues.
Thanks to its cast of remarkable women Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, Whoopi Goldberg, Brittany Murphy, Clea DuVall, Vanessa Redgrave, Elisabeth Moss, Girl, Interrupted may seem like an obvious MUFF-approved pick. But did you also know that the script was co-written by women Lisa Loomer and Anna Hamilton Phelan? Or that Winona actively pushed to get the rights to Susannas book initially? Or that a number of the aforementioned cast members would go on to direct their own features see: Angelina Jolies 'By the Sea', Clea DuValls 'The Intervention'?
In short, there is a lot to discuss about this film, and we look forward to taking on all this and more during the post-screening discussion. As with all RGT events, please stay tuned for more information about the discussion portion, including our participants and event sponsors.
Big thank you to our Community Partner on this and every RGT screening, Reel Girls Toronto.

ABOUT REAL GIRL TALK:
Reel Girl Talk is a discussion-based screening spinoff of The MUFF Society. In addition to screening films made by and/or about women and other marginalized groups, Reel Girl Talk encourages critical analysis of these works and the way they present issues these communities are facing. After each Reel Girl Talk screening, women from varying age groups, backgrounds, and experiences will be invited to compare and contrast the film they have just seen with their own lives.
ABOUT THE MUFF SOCIETY:
The MUFF Society is a feminist screening series that is based in Toronto, but has seen monthly screenings in New York City and San Francisco as well. We aim to champion women in film both on and off screen. We do this by programming films that have awesome female characters and/or have powerhouse female players behind the scenes: female directors, female writers, female editors, etc. We are also an online community which aims to keep conversations about women in film flowing and which supports and promotes other film events and initiatives which are focused on women in film. Check us out across the web and get a better feel of what we're all about:
