U2 Photo Exhibit by Nick Smash: On display will be photos of U2 when they played at The El Mocambo the day after John Lennon was assassinated in December 1980. Captured by Nick Smash for his fanzine ‘Smash It Up’ these raw black and white images show the band at the very beginning of their career.
The day after John Lennon was assassinated in New York City a little known Irish band called U2 played at The El Mocambo.
If you listened to CFNY, read The British music papers or the local fanzines or went to Records On Wheels or The Record Peddler you would have picked up on the buzz this new band was generating.
Nick Smash had been publishing his ‘Smash It Up’ fanzine for just over a year.
U2 were lumped in with the post punk generation of bands but were different as they had more atmospherics, a compelling vocalist and a name that didn’t really mean anything. Gone was angst ridden anger and inarticulate rage.
