One Year Later: The Aftermath of Assisted Suicide in Canada
Please join us at our 3rd annual summer symposium, One Year Later: The Aftermath of Assisted Suicide in Canada on Friday, July 28th 2017. As the title suggests, we will be discussing the impact of the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) law over the past year. We are partnering up with Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto to present to you the most recent data and evidence concerning the new Medical Assistance in Dying law, euthanasia in Canada, and how it has and will continue to affect Canadians.
There have been 1324 MAiD cases since June 2016. This symposium will highlight some of these cases, what led to them, which individuals are most likely to request medical assistance in dying, what are the legal ramifications, and how are medical personnel and professions being affected.
Join us for the whole day starting at 1:00 pm until 9:00 pm or stay for either half of the day.
The afternoon session will begin with:
1:00 pm: Dr. Ramona Coelho, MD., a family physician, who will address: Professionalism, Conscience and the Physician which will examine the problems with compromising conscience in a framework built on ethical decision making and how moral integrity is the most necessary for patient protection.
2:00 pm: Alex Schadenberg of EPC who will examine Caring for People in the Community with emphasis on the vulnerable and how to respond to those who are most at risk.
3:00 pm: Kevin Dunn, Films for Social Change Kevin will describe how he became interested in documenting assisted suicide internationally as well as show a special segment and screening of one of his upcoming documentaries from Dunn Media.
The evening session will commence following dinner which will be served at 4:30 pm-6:00 pm.
Our evening segment will feature our two key-note speakers:
6:00 pm: Lawyer Albertos Polizogopoulos, will give a legal interpretation on the MAiD law and its connotations. It is notable to mention that he is a constitution and civil lawyer representing a group of over 4,700 doctors across Canada that has launched a court challenge to Ontario regulations that require them to refer patients to physicians willing to provide assisted death.
7:00 pm: Toronto bioethicist, Bob Parke, will speak about his experiences as a bioethicist, the problem with MAiD affecting hidden professions, as well as the origin and continued progress of the safe haven hospice in the GTA. His talk is entitled, Putting Values into Practice - Creating a Safe Haven Hospice: A Positive Response to a Negative Reality.
All symposium speakers will unite to join our expert panel discussion and take questions from the audience at 8:00 pm. You don’t want to miss this exciting event!
Cost for the full day is $50 which includes dinner; $20 for students. Either half of the day is $35, evening lecture is $20.
